The back light or inverter board may be going out. You may want to see about getting a new one. You can usually find the inverter boards on ebay for cheap. You might have to replace the whole screen. If you decide to get a new screen, make sure you get the same type of screen that you have now (there are two different types).

I also have an IBM Thinkpad and that happens to me sometimes. I couldn't seem to find any help on the issue, so eventually if I just couldn't get it to work, I unplugged it, pulled the battery out for a few seconds, put it back in, plugged it back in.... and then presto! Good like nothing happened. I was told it might just be one of it's quirks. It actually doesn't happen much anymore. Now if someone could just help me with that hupigon virus!

It depends on the setting on your notebook. Usually if you are running on battery alone (without AC Adaptor) the system will take action to save the power consumption accordingly and blacks out the screen after a few minute. It can be adjustable on the windows power saving property.

Maybe because you have screenserver (power saving) feature enabled on your system. You can check that by.
1) Right click on the desktop
2) Goto > Properties
3) Click on Screen Saver tab
4) Click on "Power" and check the "turn off the monitor" settings
