What's broke?

Check to see if any of the local high schools are still teaching a shop class. They are always looking for cars for their students to work on. Normally they just take donation cars and you don't get them back but if you explain your circumstances, you might find a class willing to help. Private schools will probably be a better resource than public schools because then you don't have the government involved. Also many communities have a private adult education center (in many areas it is called The Learning Annex) that teaches basic car repair and they might be willing to have their students fix your car.

On a related subject, you can get haircuts/hairstyles at a greatly reduced cost from your local beauty school, and low cost dental work from the State University's dental school. Students are pretty closely supervised during all these procedures. Checking with places like this might make your income stretch a bit.

What is broken? There is much that can be easily fixed by almost anyone with a few tools and a used part from the junkyard or a rebuilt part. If you know what the problem is, perhaps you have a relative or neighbor who would be willing and able to do the repair? Perhaps someone from your church? SSI may or may not have resources to help, but if you are on other disability as well (workers comp for example) I'd definitely lean on them. Either way if you need the mobility for medical reasons (appointments, therapy) they OUGHT to help.

As the owner of an automotive repair facility I can tell you that all of the posts to this thread so far would be suggestions or questions I would ask. The first step would probably be to get the cost as low as possible for the repair. If you will tell us what is wrong with your car and what the shop proposes to do to fix it I can help you with some cost cutting options. As far as help for paying for it, programs vary from state to state and even county to county. If you post your city and state someone may be able to put you in touch with an agency that can help you.

You could try approaching some local social service agencies. Some will grant funds for vehicle repairs. Some churches will help with vehicle repairs. If you are a veteran I have heard of some veteran agencies and service organizations that will help. Sorry you are having this problem, know you can't be getting much money. Anything you charge will have to be paid back with interest. Good Luck.

Ask around to see if there is an auto mechanic school nearby that someone can take your car to.

Usually, the labor is free, but you have to bring the parts.

You can find some parts or refurbished parts, at junk yards for next to nothing.

Good Luck.
