I will be moving to San Diego or Miami this coming year to continue my graduate studies. I would like DETAILED information from those who have lived in either one of these cities (or both). How are the people? Job Market for professionals? Any info you have in general will help me out a great deal.

P.S. My fiancee speaks spanish as his first language and his English is coming along. Will he be able to get by in these cities pretty well awith limited English ability? (Is beginning English language immersion classes now)

Let me know....thanks

Both cities have a HUGE spanish speaking population. In Miami its mostly Cuban. In San Diego it's mostly Mexican. I live in San Diego. I found Miami to be overly hot and sticky. Where as San Diego is always great in temperature! The city in Miami is a little more busy then in San Diego. However San Diego stretches out almost endlessly with shops and suburbs. Chula Vista is the cheapest and most spanish of the area.(I live their) In fact I have almost never heard english in downtown chula vista. As for the people, the latinos are very nice here, the white people are kind of mixed. The liberals treat me well, and the conservatives not so much. Its very mixed here culturally, I happen to be an Italian. Hope this helps.

My opinion is that a Spanish-only speaking person who be happier in Miami (though San Diego isn't bad either). As far as the job market for professionals -- it highly depends on what kind of profession you're talking about. San Diego has some highly paid high-tech professions like Biotech (suffering a bit in San Diego at the moment) and Communications (as in signal processing and computer programming). San Diego has also many other professions that have been cited as not being well enough compensated given the high cost of housing.

Grew up in Miami - -moved to San Diego 01/1992 - -back in Miami since 07/1996.
That having been said, when people would ask me the difference between Miami and SD, I would tell them that, IMHO, "San Diego is a big city with a small town feeling and Miami is a big city with a small town mentality.
Also, fluency in Spanish is much more important in Miami than in SD.

If you like GIANT COCKROACHES, hurricanes, and hot, humid, sticky, and uncomfortable weather, then Miami is your place!
