I am an aspiring singer/songwriter and I plan to start recording anytime soon for an album. But before I do that, I want to know if there is anyways to improve my voice? I can sing naturally (Dont confuse me with those American Idol rejects who can't hit a note to save theif life) but I want to get better. I believe lessons would help, but they are TOO expensive for my budget at the given time, So i'm wondering if any of you know of any methods or exercises I can do, or if there is a way I should be holding my lips/body/mouth to sing a certain note. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Generalization about Rap and Pimps? But anyways, I'm singing R&B. And since artist selling nowadays, Ex: Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, etc. don't have GREAT voices but still sell records that's what im looking to do, but with a better voice then them. So anymore suggestions would be appreciated.

One of the best exercises you can do is practice your breathing from your diaphragm. Over time this will open up your lung capacity, even out your breathing and strengthen your natural voice.

Where possible, never sit when you are singing as this compresses the diaphragm but if you do, ensure your posture is correct by sitting up straight, no slouching as this can affect your breathing.

Also, like the piano player, practice your scales. A basic 101 for any singer and while it may seem repetition, you will be amazed at how effective this is in taking your voice to the next level.

Quite honestly, I think anyone who calls themselves a "Pimp" ANYTHING is more likely to run their mouth over a beat (rap) than sing... But, if youre TRUELY SERIOUS about SINGING, then PRACTICE on your own, TRY some choral coaching (even a church choir director would be glad to give you pointers and constructive criticism for FREE) and listen to peoples suggestions to you.

listen to the greats man and if u play an instrument play the tune and sing along to it depends on what u want if ur going for single vocals well take yer pick theres loads of great solo singers but dont confuse using them to get ur own voice with ending up sounding liek them just use them as a guitarist would to learn different styles then make it ur own cant go wrong with macca(the beatles) for lead and backing vocals

Just a small tip or two: Develop your own style to make you stand out and look different (but not TOO different, like yodeling or anything :P). Also, breathing is vital.
