I'm planning to "chuck it all" and start somewhere else in the US, probably in several different places over the next few years (I'll visit from time to time, though) . I don't plan to take up permanent residence in any of these places or have just one job during this time (I'll take day labor and temp jobs as needed to get by), but I prefer to have a ready-made cover story to tell friends and relatives (who, being stable sorts, tend to pooh-pooh this sort of "throwing caution to the wind" activity). I don't want to tell them anything as trite as "secret agent," though; it has to be something believable that no one has any reason to object to. I don't have a trade per se (like a medical degree), so something like "volunteering at a travelling clinic for the poor" is out, too. It has to be pretty generic. Thanks.

I'm one of those "stable sorts" and found it excruciatingly painful and worrying when our younger son flew the nest and was pretty much incommunicado except occasionally when he emailed. He did all this adventuring and now is living with us again (we choose to live in a big old three generational way). I am grateful everyday for his being nearby now and recognize that he grew a lot during this time away from (well, overwhelming? overbearing?) family-- but I would suggest strongly- recommend- beg that you keep in touch with your parents on a regular basis. I believe that they will give you their blessing if they know that you are doing what you need to do to find out who you are ("doing some traveling"), and that you care enough to keep connected in a meaningful way.
God bless!

I hope you are not leaving kids behind while you 'chuck it all'.
If you are a responsible adult, you do not have to have a cover story. Tell the truth and just go. While you are away, call, e mail or write to the people you care about. Let them know how you are and where you are. Just up and leaving and lying about it is irresponsible and inconsiderate.
Bad things continue to happen to good people and you do not want your folks to be upset or in the dark and worry everytime they hear of a negative out of town story in the news.
Go to and consider joining a church in the city/town you visit. If you don't like the first one, try another.
Maybe you could consider going to visit relatives/friends in different cities for a time.
Get a physical before you leave town.
Get/maintain a bank account with a national bank.
Photocopy your Social Security Card and Driver's License/State I.D. Only have the originals with you if you really really need it for something specific. Keep the originals in a safe place where you are staying or in a safe deposit box in a bank---
If you can, get a p.o. box in the cities you are staying in (they have 6 month and 12 month boxes available).
Get phone cards so you can call home to check in from time to time.
Get a library card in the cities where you are staying. Most libraries have computers where you can keep in touch with your folks.
Good luck with your decision and be safe out there.
GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU

i don't get what the super deal is. that's different from that isn't subject-loose expertise that he used for the period of areas of his profession and why he's now now no longer the elite participant he was once. I applaud Reggie for this, by using fact of what Rodriguez has completed to harm the sport his total profession, the two with utilizing steroids besides as his absolute rubbish character off container. i can understand why Reggie does no longer choose for Rodriguez to connect him interior the corridor attributable to a syringe on an identical time as Reggie surely labored for it. i could do the comparable ingredient, regardless of who that's. A consumer is a shopper, and that they are no good for the sport

You don't have to cook a story. Just tell them the truth. Nothing hurts more than the true. In today's globalisation, going overseas is a good option to first; see the world outside and second, to explore opportunities. I'm sure your relatives and friends will envy you for having that courage to "chuck it all" and start your life anew, well....sort of.

You sound like you are immature and everyone would be better off without you. Why a cover story? You want to be a homeless, shiftless bum and live off the land like the old cowboy movies?
Have a great time! Caring loving people at home deserve better from you and apparently they aren't going to get it.

Just tell them you are leaving for awhile. You do not have to give anymore information. You don't know, you might come back sooner than you think. If you are an adult you do not owe people an explanation. It is always better to not say anything than to lie.

they call that a 'walk-about' in Austrailia... according to crockadile dundee... too bad we dont have an equally acceptable practice in the US.
Cover stories are lame... your reasoning is perfectly sound. Enjoy- go discover yourself.
