I probably wouldn't be able to add anything that someone hasn't already said, but a good resource would be the IMDB top 250 list. It's pretty much what everyone agrees to be a good movie and if you click on the side, it can show votes by genres, decade, and gender.

I think "The Notebook" has been one of the best movies in the last couple of years. I guess it would be considered a chick flick but it's a really well-written movie. Also, the Matrix Trilogy. If you have never thought much of Keanu Reeves, by the time you are through with these movies, you'll want him for yourself. Also, The Ring trilogy is considered by the Oscars to be a "Perfectly Directed" movie. The effects are great and tells the story really great. I've heard "The Good Sheppard" is a great movie and has a lot to do with the political climate we are in now. It's going to be my next choice. I have a lot more if needed. I would love to be a critic in the real world.. (ahhh pipe dreams).
