He was a good man and the last Republican president I liked and trusted. He picked up the mess left by the Nixon resignation and tried to bring some semblance of order to the country after Watergate and all that implies. You have to wonder what he would have accomplished had he served a full-term instead of just a couple of years. And, he is the answer to a trivia question: name the only US president who was never elected. Ok, technically you could also say Bush, but let's not go there. RIP - President Ford.

all American presidents are basically good people and that is what makes America a wonderful country to be "in" -while not born into. Gerald ford was the only president of the united states that was not elected. hats off for that. and he was the only president that made the
ultimate sacrifice to fully pardon his predecessor Richard Nixon for all "his ills" during his presidency. thus by doing this great humanitarian act -- ford was not re-elected or just elected for his next term. i believe this was a great act of decency and humanity for the good of the country. i respectfully salute the man. may g-d bless.

I'm Sad to learn of President Ford's passing. I remember when he was selected to fill the office of the Vice-Presidency, and at that time he knew it was inevitable that he would have to succeed Nixon.
President Ford, is the only president that I could really honestly believe had true compassion for the American People. President Ford worked tirelessly to reconcile America after the turbulent years that involved Vietnam and the Watergate Scandal. For his service I will be forever grateful. God Bless him.

Things to remember Ford for:
1) Pardoned Nixon to spare the country at the cost of his own election.
2) WIN= Whip Inflation Now
3) The man was accident prone. I felt he used it to great advantage as the comics zeroed in on this rather than policy. Smart move, really.
4) Problems that came to his family, they were open and up front about including his wife's bout with alcoholism and his son's out of wedlock child whom they welcomed into the family.
5) Survived two assassination attempts.
He inherited a Presidency torn apart, a country divided, and he did his best to mend them all, even at his own expense. As a liberal, I give President Ford his due here. A President has passed.

Really? Yes, very sad. He was from Michigan and had the very tough job of pardoning Nixon so that Nixon (and Americans) would not have to withstand the further disgrace of a criminal trial of a president.
He served faithfully in the House of Representatives from 1949 to 1973.
After his presidency, he committed his efforts to making the world a better place.

He had the courage to pardon Nixon.
He knew that pardoning Nixon was the right step.
Otherwise we would likley be not a republic or a democracy.
If the impeachment had succeeded, many other laws would eventually had been passed and many of us would not have the freedoms we have now.

I didn't know about it until I saw your question. He had an impossible job, trying to restore credibility to the white house and the presidency after Watergate. I think he'll go down in history as a caretaker president.

I have not seen any story on this. Not sure what you are talking about. He is in his 90's
EDIT
You are correct. After I logged off I heard the news. 93 years is a great life. He may be best known for being the only President never elected.

its sad when any president passes away. Yes, I agree, it did make me sad. He seemed to be a good man and was able to pull the troops out of Vietnam after the fall of Siagon.
