I have a pretty good GPA- like a 90, but I am not good at the sat or the act, my last act score was only a 20. Do colleges care more about my gpa or sat/act?

If your SAT/ACT score is horrible, admissions may not even look at your application. Usually, colleges set an SAT/ACT score threshold that you must cross before they will look at your application seriously. Although, your grades and the difficulty of the classes you take weigh more than the SAT/ACT, you need to get a decent score for a good chance of being considered.

Colleges look at both, they don't necessarily care about one more than the other. Usually, GPA's are pretty consistent with SAT/ACT scores (if a person usually studies a lot for school and has a high GPA, they will most likely spend the time to study just as hard on SAT/ACT), and if there is a reason for a big discrepancy, people might include it in their personal statements. In addition, colleges will look at your extracurricular activities, work experience, and your personal statement.

If you are struggling with the SAT or ACT, the best thing to do is to take a preparation course or to buy a book on your own and study for the exam on your own. You can re-take the exam and colleges will look at your highest score on the exam.

You should also look at websites of the colleges you want to go to because they will provide you with useful information like average GPA and SAT/ACT scores of applicants. This way, you can sort of gauge what you need to get into the school you want.

Good luck!

Nearly all colleges say that they care more about your GPA than the SAT or ACT. Your score is low, but not terrible. Don't worry about it too much. Take the test again and see if you can do better.

Don't forget that there are only a handful of schools that reject most of their applicants. Most schools take more than half of all the kids who apply, and I think you would definitely be in the top half at most schools. Just keep working and spend your time trying to figure out what kind of school will make you happy, rather than fretting about admission.

Poor or low GPA's can affect your ability to be selected to attend a better college, especially if it is a private college. Sometimes a college will place you on academic probation for a semester or require that you attend two years of community college and then transfer in for your junior and senior years. The purpose of the SAT/ACT is to measure the academic potential of students and weed out those who may be academically week. Take a prep course, they are well worth the money and time.

They probably care more about your GPA, but if your SAT/ACT score isn't good, they won't even look at your GPA, so maybe it would be a good idea to retake your test.

Being a Freshman in college, schools do look at excellent SAT scores for top placement and scholarships so you do need to do all you can to do well on them, however, there are other aspects of your personality that schools, especially small schools, will look at. Good Luck!!!
