The PS3 is supposed to be backwards compatible with PS2 games. However, the PS3 has been having difficulties playing games from the PS2 library. In an attempt to prevent this from happening Sony has supposedly added hardware from the PS2 into the PS3 but nevertheless the problem still exists. When the first wave of PS3's were released in Japan this problem was discovered, Sony reportedly responded to this issue siting that they expect the PS3's shipped to the US will have the same faults.

Although sony has stated that every PS1 and PS2 game that observed its technical requirments checklist should be playable on the PS3, about 3% have had problems. Tekken 5, Gran Turismo, and Final Fantasy games have had problems, amongst others.
Also, the Guitar Hero controller is not compatable with the PS3

There was some talk about Sony implementing a way for users to play their Playstation 2 games on the Playstation 3. I haven't heard anything on this recently though. But for some added information I know for a fact that gamers can install Linux on their Playstation 3's.

they say they can do that, but actually it's just a way to fool people and to make more money. even though some games may play on PS3, they don't function well and some problem could occur due to incompatible.
