I just purchased an hdtv and i have basic cable with a little box. I saw their comercials for free hd channels, but are there any hidden costs, like do i need a new box, or any extra monthly fees?

To receive HD, first you need to upgrade to Digital Cable.
At minimum you will get the local channels (PBS, CBS, NBC, etc.) and those transmit a lot of programs in HD. Cox may be nice and give you a couple more HD channels.
Your TV should be able to receive basic digital cable without an extra box. If it has a cable card slot, then you can get a cable card from Cox and see all cable channels (but you pay more).

This free HD claim is really not true, the"Free HD" channels they claim you can get , you can get them over a normal tv antenna. If you want more channels in HD, you need to rent their cable box for $15 or more.

Local cable companies usually have local offices and equipment can be returned. Satellite companies are not so local. You own the Direct TV receiver, you are leasing the Cox receiver. Sometimes Direct TV runs specials so that waive that fee.
