I recently replaced the flapper and the float on my toilet and now it only refills the full amount every other time and flushes every other time. Why is this and what could I have done wrong?

Never heard of it, you did something wrong. If it fills once it should fill twice.

It has to be somehow caused by the flapper. The float will only stop water when it senses water at a certain level in the tank. Listen or look for the water to stop filling the tank. I suspect that the flapper is not sealing the opening into the toilet and that it randomly seems like every other time that it works. Make sure that the chain on the flapper is the right length. It shouldn't catch on anything and it shouldn't rest on the flapper as it closes. Also make sure that the flapper seats correctly. If the water continues to run into the tank the flapper is not seated properly. Set the float so it stops the water at about the same level as it was.

May be the flapper stays open - open the tank cover and see what happends after the first flush - see if the tank is filling up normally - with the cover open try flushing it again - you should be able to see what the problem is - you might have to re-align the chain or put in a new assembly - good luck

i'll guess there is something binding where the float connects to the shutoff valve. you will have to take the lid off the tank and watch as you flush, what happens different each time? when it works what is it doing differently than when it doesn't work? you can figure it out by what it isn't doing that it did when it worked. the worse case is you replace the whole fill valve with a modern one that doesn't use an old float. good luck, and get back to us when you know more.

Make sure the water level is correct in the tank and make sure the water is going into the bowl as well as the tank when it is filling. You might have the fill line pinched on the fill tube ( the black or white line that is about a quater inch around and goes to the overflow/fill tube.

maybe the chain on the flapper is too lose so theres not enough time for the tank to fill up before thte flapper goes down.
