Whenever my parents disagree with something I like, they shake their head and tell me "that isn't normal", and i'm sure throughout ppls lives they heard that as well. You have a special gift, "no i don't want to see spirits, i want to be normal". My question to the world is..what is normal defined as-on a whole? (in your opinion)...and...why?

It's really difficult for me to answer this question because I've never been "normal". What is "normal" anyway"? Well, okay, I guess thats what you are asking for, so at least I can try to answer that intelligently.

"Normal" is probably best defined as being similar in a manner of comparison with others opinions or likenesses. Failing to abide by any number of social or cultural norms, even those which one is not able to control, is often the cause of ostrasization (if that is even a word) to the affected person. Some people take such ostrasization to heart, but others don't, and if they don't, they are typically further ostrasized for that decision.

Something that has always puzzled me is why, as humanity, we value our individual uniquenesses, but as a culture, we do just about everything possible within our power to squelch uniqueness. Why is it such "a bad thing" to be "different"? Is it the mere fact that being different challenges the social and cultural norms of the greater society, and if it is, why is this necessarily such a bad thing?

I'm sorry. I'm not really answering any questions here. :-( I'm simply asking more questions. Maybe that is, in fact, part of the problem with trying to define "normal" since nobody can really agree on what is truly meant by the word.

Normal is a careful term one must tread on. What is normal in one society, family, country, or even at work, etc., could be considered not normal in another.

You might say normal is zone-oriented. You have to look around and see what is acceptable or not where you live, from your area, to your country or society, right down to your family, relative, or friends in that ORDER!!!

Why? You might say "normal" is acceptance behavior by people based on historical adaptation due to regionalism.

I think that "normal" means the same thing as "average." When someone tells you that you "aren't normal," take it as a compliment; it means you're unique (and you don't let society define you).

Hey, we match! Happy new year to you!

I once read a great little sign. It said, "Normal is only a setting on a washing machine," meaning, there is no such thing. Being "normal" is being yourself.

people tell me i'm abnormal but its because i'm not necessarily always conventional or doing what everyone else does...people think following the majority is normal but i'd say doing what you want and being yourself is normal...in reality there is no one definition of normal. i mean were you ever called weird? what is weird right? people just want to put people in a box but i aint' going to go in there! they may just want you to think different and don't like your response but who cares?

To be normal means to keep the windows of your mind properly curtained but not shut, and the doors shut but not locked.

normal is what the majority of society believes or does.

although i don't really believe in "normal". no two people are the same. i'd much rather be considered abnormal.

hummmm
I don't think they think your not normal. (does that make sense?)

I think they might be disappointed in the decisions you have made.
Maybe think about specific things they say are not normal.
and ask your parents how should you have acted or responded
