I'm at 38 plus 1 day pregnant, and am only 1 cm dilated. My doc didn't give me a % of effacement, but just told me that she's pressing up against my cervix and its softening. So....will walking help me dilate more?

Yes, but not until your body is ready to. I tried walking since 36 weeks when they told me I was 1 cm dilated, but I didn't go into labor until 3 days after my due date. I had my baby a few days ago, and they made me walk up and down the halls for an hour. It made my cervix dilate 4 cm! I was in labor for 32 hours though, so I was trying anything and everything!

Good luck and congrats!

Walking is said to speed up dilation because the movement helps rock the baby into the best position for him/her to press against your cervix. If the baby is already in the best position he/she can be in, then walking really won't help. Also, you want to try and conserve your energy in case you end up with a long labor, or a labor that starts at the end of the day and keeps you up all night. So walks are fine, but don't overdue it, especially if you think labor might be starting.

I don't think it will help with dialation, but it will definitely help with an easier delivery! Women who are more active during their pregnancy have way easier labor than those who lay around more, so whether or not it helps with dialation or not, it is good for you! As far as dialation goes, I would recommend an accupressure foot massage, or acupuncture. This will more than likely induce you. I know that at the end of my pregnancy, I was scheduled to be induced on Monday, but I didn't want that. So, since I am a massage therapist and know the points on the feet to induce labor, I showed my mom where to press and she worked on me for a half an hour or so at about 11:30 pm on Friday night, and I went into labor at 4:00 Saturday morning.... If this doesn't work, or if you would rather not do that, try doing a few (2 or 3) small jumping jacks before you go to bed each night. This will help the baby to drop, and you to dialate.
Good Luck!!!!

Walking does help but to tell you the truth I have three children and with the last two I had sex and was in the hospital a few hours later 5cm. Sex is the key.

No, it does not help in speeding up dialation. Walking helps you to know whether you are in true labor or not. If you are having contractions, start walking, and the contractions slow down, you are just having braxton hicks contractions, but, if contractions get stronger and closer together from walking, you are in true labor.

I have heard that sitting on the toilet or an excercise ball does more to help speed things up than walking because it opens up the pelvis.

The baby will come when it does, but walking will give you a shorter labor.
