I don't know, either. I DO know that it was believed by some of the ancient Greeks thousands of years ago! It only takes some thought and experience with eclipses to figure out, not telescopes. Europeans RE-discovered it.

Pythagoras, then years later Eratosthenes used pythagorian math to come up with a very accurate circumference.
