Well, the problem is most people are in denial. Most people are so unhappy with their lives, that when they see YOU happy, they want to ruin it for you! See most people are just hurt little children that never received that attaboy or that pat on the back from mommy and daddy when they were children, and now WE are all paying for it NOW..These days if you find somebody that likes to be left alone, or likes to keep to himself, people think he's got anti social tendancies or hes strange or weird or something. NO, hes actually one of the last true American heroes. If people could stop caring what other people thought, and stop trying to get attention from everyone, this would be a much better place to live.
So to answer your question, I believe that there have always been stupid people in the world, but it's just now that everyone feels its ok to SHOW you how stupid they actually are. Hope this helps..

Yes. People are getting lazier and lazier, they don't want to work doing things well or correctly or be respectful, don't want to think things out carefully or give a crap about things or others or how things are done,.... they pay attention in many ways much less too. Too much brain, emotion, feeling and thinking work for most today if they were to try to do the things I wrote above.

Wrldzgr's answer is superb (yang/bright style), but here is another angle (yin/shadow style) -
A thief thinks all around him are thieves;
A truly kind person thinks everybody around are kind people;
An honest person thinks all around him/her are honest;
A talented person just can't believe one has no talent;
A dull person can suffer from dullness everywhere;
A joyful person enjoys joy anywhere;
So, a really stupid person thinks everybody else is stupid.
Also,
A good student can learn even from a fool; and
A bad one cannot learn even from a genius teacher.
Personally, I suppose, everybody can learn anything they want.
