Hi there. I have been collecting Louis Vuitton bags for nearly 6 years now. There are many many different ways to tell if it is real or a knock off. It would of course help to know which bag you are interested in (epi, monogram, damier collection...etc...).
There are many many fakes floating around out there and many many sellers selling fakes as authentic bags. I would have to say that the biggest stay far away sign would be price. If it is too good to be true....chances are it's fake. There are many reputable sellers on ebay that ONLY sell authentic Vuitton bags. I would be happy to guide you if ever you would be interested. I bothers me when I see so many people being had and spending hundreds of dollars on a bag that is fake.
I would first look for date code NOT SERIAL NUMBER. Many people call it a serial number when in fact it is called Date Code. Now, as for the code it should begin with 2 letters followed by 4 numbers. The Model number of the bag is NOT a date code and is NEVER stamped inside the bag.
Secondly....Authentic Vuittons should NEVER EVER have a tag hanging off the bag, a green envelope, white paper tags with a model number and certainly not certificate of authenticity. Vuitton does not do this.
Third would be lining. There are many different linings from Alcantara (raspberry, charcoal or beige colored). Brown cotton coated canvas lining, leather lined etc... The interior should be fine and soft. Not hard beige uneven suede like materials.
Forth would have to be stamping and if it matched the date code. Example made in U.S.A have certain date codes. made in France have others as well as made in Spain and made in Italy (mind you, only very very few are made in Italy).
I hope this helps. If you should EVER need help in the future with buying a Vuitton bag, please email me at anytime and it would be a pleasure to help you out.
Take care :o)

Well, does it have any tags on the inside that say "Louis Vuitton" on it? If so, it's real. Also, look at the stitching. If it's poor-quality stitching, it's fake. In addition, some fake Louis Vuitton purses have different print patterns on them. Compare the design with a real one.

On the inside Of the purse it says " THIS IS A LOUIS VUITTON BAG. MADE IN FRANCE." and something else. It says it on real leather so you might want to check for that.

1. The handles of the bag. If the handles aren't made of 100% perfect leather then the bag is fake. Look for frayed edges and rub your nail on the handle to see if the pigmentation in the leather changes in any way. If it does then it is fake.
2. The stitching... Every single stitch on a genuine LV is perfect. Study each and every stitch, looking for the tiniest flaw, and trust, if the stitching has even one slightly crooked stitch, it is fake.
3. If you didn't buy it at the store, it's probably fake. There are more fake LV's out there than real ones and the real ones are largely purchased at the official LV retailers like the LV store, ELuxury, etc.
4. Take it to the LV store and lie and say you got it as a gift but you want to verify its authenticity. They'll tell you the truth!

1. If it claims to be "brand new" and costs less than $300, most likely it is fake. 2. If the "LV" logo is upright on both sides, it might be a fake. 3. If the piping is not leather, it is fake 4. If the seams are uneven, frayed, the monogram is off or the bag is poorly sewn, it is definitely fake. 5. If there is no date code (a.k.a date number) provided or if the seller is reluctant to provide a date code or receipt, it could be fake. 6. If it's a new bag and the bag's handle is a different color leather than that of the piping, it's fake. 7. If the dust cover has rounded edges and/or it doesn't come with a dust cover, it's fake. 8. If the bag has a hanging tag (of any type) or a bright yellow tag or envelope, it's definitely a fake.

That's next to impossible these days with all the replicas floating around. The link I provided gives some really great tips though. It's alot of reading but VERY helpful.
