Since you live in Chicago, several days can be spent exploring the outstanding museums in the city, something I used to do any time I could, including taking the Illinois Central down to the Museum of Science and Industry after hitting the Art Institute, Field Museum, and Planetarium.
Of course you have to share my tastes to think that is a good vacation.

Go on a cruise. There are a lot of great discounts on websites like Travelzoo.com and priceline.com. You pay one price and go to a lot of great places. I have gone on cruises at the last minute for 7 nights for around $350 and all the fabulous food is included, and so are the ports like mexico, st. thomas etc. The only thing that is expensive is the alcohol, but you can get creative and buy your own cheap booze in mexico and smuggle it on the ship. You dont have to book your excursions on the ship either. When you get to port there is a lot of great information on cheap excursions at half the price that the ship charges. The nightlife on the ship is awesome, especially on Costa cruise line.

Call Amtrak and book a train to New Orleans in early February. I hear Mardi Gras is entertaining, I can't really remember it though.
"The City of New Orleans" runs straight from Chicago to New Orleans with relaatively few stops.

go to vegas. You can usually find pretty cheap rooms (probably not during the holidays) and the casinos have nice pools, or, since its winter, you can go see a show. stay for a night oor two and it probably wont cost you much.
unless you don't live within driving distance, then plane tickets would rack up the price
