The bones will fuse back together in whatever position they are in.
If they are misaligned this could cause problems later on, it is best to go to the doc and get the break set in a cast to make sure it heals properly.

For broken bones, it depends if it's totally separated, then you will need a cast. If it's just a crack like a hairline fracture, sometimes the doctors don't cast them anymore. Your doctor should be able to make that decision after checking the xray results.
FYI:Sprained is for ligaments and strain is for muscles
For strained muscles, it needs rest and ice. Don't keep the joint that the muscle move in just one position for a long time as it will cause the muscle to shorten. For example the hamstring group located at the back of the thigh.Very commonly strained, it bends your knee.If you keep it bent while it's healing, it shortens and you will difficulty and more pain straightening your knee in the future.Hope this helped you.

if you brake a bone you need to have it set and casted. Bones will mend sometimes without being casted but they won't mend properly. Imagine just squirting all kinds of super glue or rubber cement on a broken ceramic vase... if you use enough it will probably hold it together but if you don't set it right it's going to look horrible and it won't be very durable. The same goes for a broken bone... you may end up with it being shaped really weird. And most of all you can cause damage that will really affect you down the road. Infections, nerve damage, etc.

DO NOT LET YOUR BONES MEND BACK ON THEIR OWN! If possible, do the cast thing or a brace for an extended period of time.
From experience, I sprained my ankle really bad and used a brace for a couple of days and off I went on my own without consulting with a professional.
I haven't been able to stretch my ankles evenly. The one that was sprained can only go so far. It's frustrating if you are active and can not perform like before an accident as minor as a sprained ankle.

It very much depends on the type of fracture... there's stress fractures, which heal on their own, and at the other extreme, displaced fractures, which will turn out disfiguring you and leaving you most likely with decreased function, along with possible problems w/nerves and blood vessels.
Today orthopedists try to cast as little as possible, but some fractures, especially around joints like ankles, need to be immobilized. Hope this helps.

I broke a toe and had it x-rayed. surgeon reported it may heal via itself and it did. I taped it so it did no longer harm lots, however. If this is a toe and this is not protruding at a unusual perspective, it is going to heal via itself. If this is a bone interior the foot, and rather painful, this is mandatory to to get it x-rayed. A broken bone is a lot extra well-off than a bruised, in case you have by no skill broken one. good good fortune.

If the fracture isn't casted in correct alignment, you could end up with what is called a mal-union. The only treatment for mal-union is a corrective osteotomy which is basically refracturing the bone at the mal-union site and then holding it in the correct alignment usually with a metal plate, screws, or pins. Mal-unions can be quite painful. You could also end up with post-traumatic arthritis.

Bones will mend on their own......however, if they aren't set back in the correct place, you would have to go to a Doctor and have them re-brake the bones to set them correctly! Much easier and less painful to do it right the first time.
