My Mom and I will be in Copenhagen for 1 day next April. Unfortunately it falls on a Sunday. I need advice for the best one day sightseeing plan for the city. We don't mind walking alot, but I'm also interested in getting info on the bus system. Be as detailed as possible. Thanks!

Copenhagen is a pedestrian friendly city so if you know (have a list of) what you want to see you can just keep walking and ask any local to point you in the right direction. There's a lot of stuff you can see for free walking and a few things that arent expensive to see by foot. You don't need to bother with trains subways, buses, or bicycles but they are available.

I would start in Christianhavn, for a relaxed atmosphere, walk around the canals, and see the gold tipped church, (you can walk up the steeple for a dizzing panarama.) From their its not far to the parliament building (Folketing) you can walk through the outside courtyards.

Nearby (Tivoli) is the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek...usually free and home to amazing classical sculpture. From there you are close to the walking street 'the Stroget' said with a silent g.. (not golgotha...which is in Jerusalem I gather) where you can stroll along..also stopping at Radhusplasen (Town Square+City Hall) you can walk along the Stroget and the side streets around it until you find Nyhavn harbor (Kongin Ny Torg) Kings new Square or in another direction to the University and the Roundtower and old observatory you can walk up the ramps to the top for another view of the city and across the Oresund towards Sweden. Across the street there's a postal museum with a cafe with a nice terrace on the roof.

If you walk a bit to the east a few blocks you can find the Rosenborg castle and gardens. A big park, and connected to it is an outdoor free botanical garden.

Walking another direction form the Stroget (east- along the harbor you can find Amalienborg the Queens castle and the little Mermaid. nearby is the Danish WWII Resistance museum, small but one of the most interestign in the city.

Plenty to see but if you want to save time most of it (church, museums, palaces) are just as interesting form the outside. If you want a restaraunt meal and dont want to spend a fortune try to find a Greek/Turkish buffet near the University.

One more important thing- take the city bus to and from the airport, I dont remember the number but it will say kastrup (the aiport) and its a double decker. its 10 to 20 times cheaper than taking a taxi.

You should only need a bus- tranport if your hotel is in one of the outside suburbs like Amager, Norrebro, Vesterbro, etc..and now theres a subway which connects most of the stations. YOu can buy a 5-10 click (trip) bus ticket for two-4 zones for you and your mom to travel together on. Dont be shy about asking locals for directions. You will have a hard time finding an impolite person who doesnt speak english.

If you just have one day then I would say take a walk through the musuem and then walk a bit up stoget, the shopping street, see the little mermaid and maybe Rosenburg. Not a lot is open on Sunday but I am pretty sure the Museum is, it is just closed mondays. The Museum is pretty good and it is free. I love the doll house collection. The museum is really close to the the train station so from there you should probably get on one of those Hop on Hop Off Sightseeing Copenhagen buses. I don't really think it is worth it to pay to go into Tivoli. It is fun if you have a full day but you can get a bit of a look at it from outside. The bus also goes to the little Mermaid statue. It's just a statue but the park is really nice there. You can get a free map of downtown at the train station. It will have everything highlighted. Really you could walk to all those places I mentioned. I have walked from the train station to the little mermaid once I think.

first of all one day is hardly going to scratch the surface!!!

Now the bus system runs on military time. you can get a bus to almost anywhere. I would suggest that you get down to the main train station. The reason is it is the main hub for all the buses in Copenhagen. from there you can get to Tivoil Gardens. A must see in Copenhagen. it is with in walking distance.

You can also reach the gogatha (walking street). on this street you can go to the Danish Porcelain shop and see many of the cultural things available in Denmark.

However to see the castle and the changing of the guard you will have to take a bus.

Also there is a church in downtown Copenhagen that has all of the statues of Christ and his 12 apostles. All carved by Torvalsen.

Anyway there is alot in Denmark to see and one day is just not enough. There are several castles in Denmark. Most of them are not in Copenhagen. Helsingor Castle is way out of Copenhagen and it is the Castle written about by Shakespeare in Hamlet. You could Take a train to there but it would take you about 4 hours.

Anyway Have a great trip. I wish I was going.

If you get to Copenhagen Central Station by train, I would not get off there, but would continue to Osterport station (we took the train at the airport and bought the ticket to Osterport Station, which is at about 4 stops from Central Station). From Osterport, walking for about 10 minutes, you´ll get to the Little Mermaid; . Then you can go to the Kastellet (http://www.copenhagenpictures.dk/kastel.html) and enjoy the gardens surrounding it (you should see Gefion fountain (and read about its legend). Very near is Amalienborg, at about 10 minutes walking too;the palace itself was nothing to write home about but the square around which it´s situated is really beautiful and when you are in the centre of it, looking at the end of one of the streets you´ll see Marmorkirken (Marble Church), which is worth a visit
http://www.copenhagen.com/tourism/landmarks/churches.asp?Menu=Tourism
You can continue walking to Nyhavn, the picture you´ll see everywhere when talking about Copenhagen; just beautiful.
If you have to choose a palace go to Rosenborg; it´s magnificent and it contains the Royal Treasure, which is really amazing (http://copenhagenet.dk/CPH-Rosenborg.htm)
And I would finish going back towards Central Station; near it you´ll find Tivoli Gardens, with the most beautiful gardens (http://www.visitcopenhagen.dk/enwonen/tivoli_copenhagen.asp).
And it´s also near this museum (http://www.glyptoteket.dk/?language=en&frames=yes); it´s very nice.
If you have some spare time, near Central Station it´s the Town Hall which is very nice too.(http://www.planetware.com/copenhagen/copenhagen-town-hall-dk-z-copt.htm)

Anyway, one day is too little time, but enjoy as much as you can!!

When I was there we went on a tour boat ride through the city - it was really nice It only took an hour or so but we saw lots of sights we would have other wise missed including the little mermaid and the palace.
