It won't break very easily, but it gets scratches easily if you're prone to dropping it a lot.
I had an iPod mini for over a year with no case and it worked fine, until the battery died.
If you're a really careful person, you probably won't need a case. If you want that same scratchless shine in a few years, definitely get a case to protect it from damage.
There's no harm in getting one just to protect it :)

If you got a new nano with the anodized (color) finish I wouldn't worry about getting a case. You could buy something to protect the screen.
If you have any other kind of iPod, a case wil prevent the light scratches from dulling the finish. Keep in mind that if something like a small piece of dirt gets between the case and the iPod it will scratch the iPod.

It all depends how you use it and how you move it around.
The new Nano is a lot more scratch resistant the previous version. However, never subject an iPod to pressure, like being squished in a backpack. Also, LCD screens are always vulnerable. If you keep iPod in a backpack a case is definitely recommeded.
Armband cases make it easy to keep your iPod on you when jogging.

These iPods scratch easily, but durable. They are certainly not rugged and can take big drops I would recommend purchasing a case to protect your investment.
