Anything NOT Ipod. Just get a good media player with all the features you want. You'll pay half as much as the same model using the stupid Ipod name!

It depends. Are you asking which iPod model is best (Standard vs. Nano vs. Shuffle) or which MP3 player is best (Apple, Microsoft, Creative, Sony, etc.)?

If you're asking the former, it all depends on your budget and needs. If you only want to listen to music and don't want to spend a whole lot of money, go with the iPod Nano. If you want to be able to watch videos and/or store your entire CD collection, go with a standard iPod. I'd skip the Shuffle - save up to get one of the larger capacity iPods instead. This model can be applied to other brands as well as most have similar product lines based on price/capacity.

If you're asking the latter, I'd go with either Apple (the iPod line) or Creative (the Zen line). I've found that iPod sports the most intuitive software (iTunes) as far as organizing and moving music goes and is very reliable. If you want extra features (radio tuner, built-in voice recorder), Creative is a good option. The Creative products also tend to be a bit cheaper than iPods.

Overall, expect to spend between $150 to $250 for an MP3 player with a capacity that will last you for a good while.

Do you have a model in mind?

If you can get the 80GB video ipod for $300 or lower, then you are getting a good price. If you can get the 30GB iPod for $200 or less, then this is a good price as well.

With store coupons and educational discounts, you can get some good prices. Unfortunately, iPods are rarely on sale, so that is why you have to use coupons and educational discounts.

Consider a refurbished iPod from http://apple.com/store

On the bottom, go to 'Refurbished iPod'.

I bought 3 nanos for $99 apiece this Christmas. They were in perfect shape, just in a brown box. All accessories are included.
