There is the destinctive smell of rotting flesh that is unmistakeable for those who have ever smelled it. I was wondering, however, if perhaps death itself has a different smell. Ive had three people very close to me die over the last couple of years. Each time before they died I would notice a sweet smell in the air. Flowers, perhaps roses. Odd that this was winter for two of the deaths and no flowers around.

I'm not sure.....i know dead things smell awful after a while, well i dont know personally but thats what i've been told but if you mean death as in if its approaching you then maybe, it depends on whether its a frightening death or not lol and if you sh*t yourself in the process then definately you might catch a whiff of death.
But on a serious note, i wouldnt of thought we can smell death but i'd assume we might be able to tell if death is upon us, like if we're dying. I wouldnt of thought we could smell if someone else was dying unless they had been bed prone for days/weeks.

having dealt with death and dying people I can say there is a smell i associate with death and its a difficult one to describe though quite memorable ,it's not a rotten smell nor unpleasant but distinctive nonethe less my colleagues agree with me wheter it eminates from the breath or bowels or oozes out of their skin recognition of this odour has seldom proved me wrong, trouble is the recognition of this smell usually means curative measures are long past their functionality

You can smell the dead and maybe sense death. Sometimes people will say they smell it in the air when they actually mean they sense impending disaster/ and or death.

Yes, some people know the day that they are going to die. Most know, only when that die comes, i.e they did not know it previously, only when that day came, they knew that day that they will die on that particular day. I have read instances of such happenings, like the boy in the class-room who looked in the pink of health, next day the teacher was not surprise to learn of his death, for on his last day on Earth in the class-room , the boy's face had a strange look on it . The teacher said that the boy's face and eyes had the strange look of hell .
