I would like to upgrade my system to Win2000 and possibly further, but wish to do so gradually. Where might I find the best buy since it may not be that easy to find in stores? If online, what website would I use to purchase the software? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go straight to Windows XP: Windows 2000, apart from being a failure, *is not* Windows 98 "heir", but Windows NT's! Which was designed for usage as a server and for office work.
Anyway, if your pc is old (say six year or more) it could be not enough powerful for an easy use of Windows XP (it's heavi, compared to 98); in the middle, Windows ME (true name: Windows 98 Millennium Edition :-) in 2002.
If you want to upgrade an old machine, you could also think about Linux.

W2K was a failure, apart from the amount of bug and the list of hardware incompatibility when it first came out (even Gartner group suggested not to adopt it, yet, and that's a say!), because failed in its purpose to take place of Windows NT on server: still in 2003, 8 providers out of 10 which were offering service based on Microsoft OS were using Windows NT and not W2000.

Do a search in Google. If you do not have at least the minimum specs for Win XP - 128 MB of RAM - 600 MHZ. cpu - then just upgrade to Windows 2000. However, even Win 2K will be slow without 128 - 256 of RAM.

I say eBay would be the cheapest always. And you would be wasting your time and money going to Win2000, go straight to XP.

you need to check to see what the minimum hardware requirements are for win 2k (I forget right now). you will definetly want to max out your PC with RAM and probably through in a larger faster hard drive.

Edit:

Pinguino...doesn't know squat. Win 2K was in no way a failure. users (well the ones in the US) found it to complicated to use after the simplicity of Win 98 and 98 SE (even though they were incredibly unstable).

I recommend you buy a CD-ROM.
(Some sites have dowloadable software, but
I think that's not a good idea for
Windows installation).

http://ebuszone.com/

has good prices on various Windows versions
(2000, XP),
though I've never bought from them.
