I went to L&D last night for strong contractions and the urge to push. They checked my cervix and said I was fully open on the outside, but closed on the inside. I was sent home so I'm guessing I wasn't having any progress. What does that mean...open on the outside of the cervix but closed on the inside?

I just had my baby on the 24th, and mine was doing the same thing. There is a front and back of the cervix (or you could call it outside and inside). Mine was almost all the way dilated, but the front was still not completely open when I felt the urge to push. Sometimes the outside or inside of the cervix can be slower/faster. It just takes time for everything to full be ready.

Good luck and congrats! :)

there is actually 2 cervixes, rings, so to say. It was explained to me when i was concerned about having an incompetent cervix. My dr said that the top or first "ring" is the main support and this is what has to open first, and the second lower one is more like a back up support. Weird, but this is what im told. It's not unheard of, cows have 4 cervixes, lol, interesting fact. To answer your question further, your opening (first cervix) is opened and you are waiting for the second deeper one to open. Im assumig that this is what the whole effaced thing means. Anyhow best of luck!

The only thing I can gather from your description (if you are telling it accurately) is that they meant you were fully EFFACED (the cervix has thinned out) but not dilated. If that is the case, don't be discouraged. Labor might not be far off.

i have no clue never heard of that i'd get another opinion if i were you... your open like that you could get an infection, and you don't want that.
