It says you can, but there is no "give me work" or "need help" option in the menu when you talk to someone like there is in the game cube version, What do i do?

You need to keep talking to them, you'll eventually get an errand!

eventually, they will ask you to things if you keep coming back and talking with them. When you do these tasks in the alloted time frame 10 minutes to an hour usually, they thank you with bells or objects. Also you gain their trust and eventually you can become friends with them. Who knows, they may even give you their picture in the end.

In wild world they changed it, as you can see, and it was one of the things i didn't really like about it, you had to just keep talking to them as apposed to just asking. So there was a LOT less work in wild world.
