well the easiest way to check is to bring it to a jewelry store and have them test the diamonds. I used to work with Zales so i know they have one. as far as the sapphire, if it is a big one and it is bright, glassy blue it may be lab-created. which is not fake, just forced to grow in a controlled lab. real saphs are usually a deeper darker blue and on larger stones you my see small black spots. I hope this helps. But like I said next time your in a mall swing into a jewelry store ask to have it cleaned and casually ask if it is genuine or lab created. If it is neither one they'll let you know. Good Luck

You are not stating who big it is. A 1/4-1/2 ct would retail for around 300-600. 1/2-1ct would be 600-1100. Now this is an estimate. The price is more expensive the bluer the stone. The black sapphires are less expensive and the blue colors are pricier. If you have a royal blue color you are in for a real treat. Those are the best! A 1 carat can sell for upwards to 2000! But if she bought it in 1970 I would not think it would be this much. Prices do not fluctuate that much over the years. At the most, it would probaly be worth 400-500 in todays standards

if it is that important to you, get it appraised by a jeweler.
It should not be important to you, it is a token of love.
IF you have to wonder how much he spent, well lets just say that perhaps you are a little preoccupied by money and value rather than values and love.

He was nice enough and thought enough of you to buy and give it to you. You love it...and now you want to know what he paid for it. What difference does that make? But for some reason that does mean something to you...and you will deny it... but is does.

He paid what he could afford, okay?

I too am wondering...Sadly for him...I believe you think more of the value of the ring than him.

About the only way you're going to find out for sure if it's real is to get it appraised or figure out where he bought it.

Take it to a jeweler. However, you are then showing that you don't trust the person who gave it to you and you think too much about money.

If you really want to know, ask him. Tell him you need to know for insurance purposes on your home owners insurance.

Dip it in warm or hot water then put it on. If it turns your finger in a greenish color or off color at all it's not real. I can always tell if jewelery is real or not when it gets wet.

how shallow! he buys you a gift and you want to question the value! You can take it to a jeweler and get it appraised for $50-100.
