I think that different people have different reasons. However, because most people I know started smoking in High School, I think it was them trying to fit in with the "in-crowd." I've also spoken to some people who said that if it wasn't for their smoking they wouldn't be able to take a break every hour or so. Other than that I can't really think of anything other than curiosity...some people who've never tried it may have decided to give it a shot and just got hooked on it after a while.

There are many reasons as to why this occurs. I think it involves peer pressure from friends/school, the desire to be "cool" and to fit in, and maybe a certain influence within the family (maybe a parent smokes, or a cousin, aunt etc.)
There are always reasons as to why decideds to take up smoking...it's sad and gross, but true...

There are far too many reasons why people start; however the most prevelent would have to that they think it makes them look cool or older and therefore will get along with a certain group better.
it may be stupid but who ever said the human race on a whole was smart.

Really good question! I think it is just to make them selves look cool. That is why I started, but I don't smoke anymore! I really don't think it is fair for them to have smoke breaks at work. I like to have sex alot also, but I don't get a sex break at work! Also, LOVE your nick name. LOL!

Sometimes it starts out as social smoking which turns into addiction. A lot of smokers want to stop, but can't, until they have serious health issues. I've seen it happen many times. I used to smoke for a few years, but I'm a quitter. It really stinks.

I started smoking because I like the head rush. Granted, the image did play a role at 15.

friends ask if you want a cig and you say no but the day something sh!tty happens, doesn't sound soo soo bad...its only 1 right? then you feel better and keep going back. no its not to look cool...it actually makes you look uncool and you can take breaks not smoking...very hard to quit...wish i never started.

Most people start smoking as teenagers, trying to look cool, peer pressure, rebel against parents.......thats what happened with me.

Peer pressure primarily, that and the need to do something "grownup" or rebellious. Whatever the reason, it is the most dumbass thing anyone can do to themselves and those around them. Someday I want to see a little picture of someone with a cigarette in their mouth right next to the definition of "stupid" in the dictionary. I've been clean for over 22 years, but it wasn't easy to do.
