I always ask myself that question and answer is NEVER. No matter how old they are they're a part of you. They will always be someone you brought into this world and you always want to keep safe. It's never a good idea to be overly protective to the point of being stifling and controlling. You want to be a firm parent that teaches by example and guidance and at some point you have to have enough faith in your kids to use what you've taught them out in the world or all your time spent protecting them will backfire because you'll become the person who they feel is harming them because you're not allowing them to live and think for themselves.

Parents see themselves as being underprotective, and thwarted from properly protecting their kids. Very very rarely is a parent knowing acting in an overly protective manner according to their own estimation.

This is a result of the teen-parent communication breakdown. The parent loses the ability to know what the limits are when the teen stops communicating. The default (max) limits are often applied with disasterous results, so the parent believes the max should be applied, but is pressured into applying less than they should.

Its tragic and ironic.

Kids dont like to be smothered by there parents. They like the quality time but they need some independance and space. If they go to the mall by themselves just remind them of the safety rules and dangers but you dont need to repeat it over and over. chances they already know these. It's ok for a mother to be protective, it just shows that you care. But its not neccessary to follow them around wherever you go. If you are really worried about your kids then a good choice would be to get them a cell phone. That way you will always have reach of them and you will feel much better.

I don't think anyone ever really stops being overly protective, you just learn that you have to let go so they will be able to spread their wings and fly a little, you just let them know you will be there to catch them if they fall. If you really love your child, you can't stop wanting to protect them from lifes mishaps.

When you realize that all those things we say are finally sinking in as they make good choices on their own. There is not really an age, but a maturity level that the child shows through actions, behaviors, and even the comments others make to you about your child; ie. "your son/daughter is so well behaved when they are at our house...", " it is always a pleasure to have ______ spend the night, I hope my son/daughter acts that well at other's homes", or positive feedback from your child's teachers about the maturity level your child is at. We will always be protective of our children, but we can't keep their wings clipped forever! I dread the day my son goes off to college, but I will be happy for him and know that I have taught him well and he is prepared to grow and make mistakes without me there to bail him out.
