Depends - If you have health insurance the hospital and doctor selection might be limited. If you don't have insurance or cash, the desired hospital and/or doctor you want to see might not accept you. Also the only doctors that you can see without an appointment at a hospital are the ones that work in the emergency room. All others are by appointment only.

I would find a good internist in your community and develop a relationship with them so that they would know your history. ER docs are great for acute care, but long term, you need someone who can follow your progress. You can also go to community health clinics for non-urgent care if you don't have insurance.
ERs triage patients, and you may be seen in 10 minutes or 10 hours depending on how bad it is. I've been in ERs where people are bleeding and fainting... and they still don't get preferential treatment.
Hands down... those ER docs and nurses are some of the hardest working profs in the business and they deserve our respect. They want to help as many people as they can...but time and budgets often slow them down.
Don't let whatever get bad enough to go to an ER. See your primary care MD or go to an urgent care before your go to a community ER. It may save you time, money and care.
