I got this virus that's like impossible to delete since everytime I scanned it, the removal process always freezes. So i'm thinking of reinstalling Windows XP so all the old stuff would be gone along with the malwares. However, is it possible for the virus to be "stuck" on the harddrive so that it goes everything with the harddrive even after formatting it?

If you reformat the HD, it will take out the virus. However, doing this may be more nbother than it's worth, as you will lose everying else on your HD.

There are some viruses that by nature cannot be removed with the AV software, and there will be a supplemental removal tool supplied by the AV company.
Do you perhaps know the name of the virus? Your AV software should provide this.

if you give than info I can help more.

Before reformatting the drive (which will get rid of the virus - and everything else), try booting the PC and Safe Mode and running the AV program.

To get into Safe Mode, turn the computer and begin to repeatedly press the F8 key until you get a screen the offers you the Safe Mode option. When a computer boots in Safe Mode, it prevents anything from loading except the minimum files needed to run Windows. That should prevent most viruses from loading and running, and make it possible for you to remove it.

Viruses should not survive on a harddrive reformat unless maybe if it's a boot virus.
If you reformat and reinstall windows you should be fine. Reinstalling windows only and not reformatting the harddrive will not get rid of the virus.

Using System Restore and rolling back to a date before you were infected also will help in some cases.

you have to reformat the drive, then only installing the OS will be with out virus. Before that I can give you one suggestion. You try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
