Brasso... Bar none. I work in fire station that has 5 brass poles that are 30 feet long. We have cleaned them every Satuday since the station was built in the 1960's with Brasso. They are just as shinny today as they were way back when...

For the ultimate Brasso, buy a small piece of Jewelers Rouge (equivilant to a stick of chewing gum) and pulverize it. Wrapping in a rag and pounding it with a hammer works. Then add it to the Brasso and throw in a copper penny to act as a shaker. (Like a BB in an aerosol can of paint)Shake it up every time and use it to polish. The rouge make the Brasso a lot more abrasive but really speeds up the polishing action. This is what we did in the Marine Corps and we believed in shiny brass! Good Luck.

Jeweler rouge with a cloth wheel is the best but it is not easy. If you only want to remove the tarnished look brasso works. If you want highly polished brass then Jeweler rough is the way to go

You can also try a home made paste of table salt and lemon juice. Rinse the piece well when done. Helps to wax it after it's cleaned too. Use auto wax. This is assuming that the piece isn't coated with lacquer as lots of brass is.
