If so what manner of Republic? Should the President be elected with real power? Or merely replace the Governer General as figure head? If not why not?

its should have been one in 1901...the way its going Britain will be a republic before us...but to answer your question, we should follow something like the french model, this way it divides power and keeps with a moderate center political environment, aswell as preserving a strict separation between religion and politics

It really doesn't make sense to me to have a President who does not have the power of the Prime Minister. Otherwise you are just creating another figurehead like the Queen.

If Australia were to become a republic then it would be appropriate to rename the Prime Minister the President and hand her the real power.

JohnL - you might remember that Australia and New Zealand were right there beside you during both World Wars to hold your hand, even though it made our own countries vulnerable to the Japanese.

Now. There should be another referendum where Australians are asked a simple yes no question on the republic issue. The details on how to change the consitution should then be put to a seperate referendum.
