Uh...my test was only an hour long...are you sure yours is going to be three? And they will only "stab" you once...then fill up how ever many vials they need from the one needle...but the sugar stuff you drink...is suppose to be in your system for exactly ONE hour...

You'll be fine.
I've had two 3 hour glucose tolerance tests before.

When you first get there, they will take your blood. The place I went tested the blood before actually starting the test. It makes sure your blood sugar isn't already dangerously low.

Then they bring out what is like a very overly sugary soda. Mine was orange flavored. Usually they have two you can choose from. You drink it all, let the know when you're done, then you wait. I was dizzy from the sugar rush. The "soda" is only drank once, not continually during. This test shows how well your body's insulin reacts to all this sugar. It shows if your insulin is working correctly.

They again test your blood sugar another time or so. You can ask the nurse just how many times they'll have to do it.

There is a numbing agent for people who can't stand needles. It's a cream and has to be put on an hour before you get the injection, or blood work done. It's called Elma Cream. My Autistic son's used it before. He's terrified of needles. It numbs the area a good long time. Ask your Dr. about it before you have to get the test done. Or call up the lab where you're going to get it done and see if they carry it and what you'll have to do to get some applied.

This is a fasting testing so you're Dr. will probably tell you nothing after midnight.

When I had my test I had to fast the night before, if I consumed anything it was only water. Then at the appt. I went in and they drew blood to see what the fasting blood sugar was.
Then I had to sit in the lobby and wait a hour, and then I went back and drank this very sugary orange soda tasting drink and then they drew more blood. I was told if it made me sick and I threw up that I had to notify them so we could restart the testing. Thankfully that didn't happen, but it did make my stomach a lil upset because I had all of this sugar in me and for the past 12 hours there was nothing in my stomach.
Then I went back to the lobby and waited the final hour and drank the drink, had my blood drawn and was able to leave.
In about 2 days from that you will get a call from your doctor and they will let you know if your numbers were good or not. And if they were a lil high you will have to talk with a diabetes consultant and learn a proper diet and how to test your blood sugar.
The worst thing about the whole test for me was the drawing of the blood because you do feel a lil nauseous afterward. Make sure you have something to keep you busy because time seems to go so slow, and if at all possible have someone come with you to keep you company and so you won't have to drive yourself because you will be a lil loopy, to say the least, and AS SOON AS YOU CAN eat something, you will feel 50x better after you have food in your stomach.
I hope this helped you and best of luck to you!!

I had one done, not fun. Basically they give you a glucose drink (like soda syrup, thick and not fizzy) and you wait an hour, get blood drawn, wait another hour, another draw, one more hour, one more draw. As long as you have decent veins it's no big deal. I have really small, really deep veins and only had one that they could draw from. The first one wasn't bad, but each one after hurt worse. But as long as they can find more than one spot, it's ok. Good luck.

Edit to add: Because some posters seem to not know, they do a three hour test if something doesn't look right on the 1 hour. It's basically to double check and to be more presice.

Ooooh. Sorry, but it might be 4 times, actually. Is it a "fasting" test? Often they draw blood first, before giving you the glucola to get a fasting level. Then at 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours.
Bring something to read or to do.
It's an important test, and one of many sacrifices that you will have to make for the good of your baby. Look at it that way.

all i remember about it was that i went in, drank some sugar soda, kind of like sprite and then waited for a while and they took some blood.
not a big deal really, but i don't get freaked out about needles and giving blood.

i used to donate plasma all the time, so i was used to being hooked up to a machine that was filtering my blood and collecting the plasma. usually took about 2 hours actually.

anyway...it's not that bad, just don't dwell on it and you'll be fine!

take care.

It's really boring, but you'll do great. Every hour, you'll drink a cup of the nasty sugar stuff, and they'll poke you. Other than that, you just sit and wait for three hours. Take a book or iPod or something to keep you busy for three hours. Good luck!

They offer you plain, orange, and cola. Trust me, go with the orange.
