Try hitting a craft store for some sale catalogs & stuff - there are usually some simple patterns for cross stitch that you can find there for a few bucks on sale racks that will help you with getting an idea on how to get started. Kits are usually the best way to get a feel for doing it - working your stitch the same way each time will give you a better result than switching between colors or rows and you may need to experiment with it with some scrap cloth to get an idea on how much floss to use and how tight to pull your stitch. You'll also find that cross stitch fabrics have smaller or larger squared depending on the floss or other type of thread/yarn etc you are using. Experiment with it and have fun with it.

http://crossstitch.about.com/ -- has free patterns

http://www.cross-stitch.ca/ -- has lessons, and products, etc.

I dont recall the maker of the "floss" or thread, but I do recall they have a website too....my daughter took up cross stitching some time back, and she used their site often.

Have Fun
