Hughes died on April 5, 1976, at the age of 70 while on an airplane owned by Robert Graf, en route from his penthouse in Acapulco, Mexico to The Methodist Hospital in Houston. It has also been argued that he died before leaving Mexico. His reclusive activities and drug use had made him practically unrecognizable; his hair, beard, fingernails, and toenails had grown grossly long, his once-strapping 6'4" frame now weighed barely 90 lbs, and the FBI had to resort to fingerprints to identify the body.

A subsequent autopsy noted kidney failure as the cause of death. Hughes was in extremely poor physical condition at the time of his death. X-rays revealed broken-off hypodermic needles still embedded in his arms and severe malnutrition. The first doctor to examine him diagnosed the cause of Hughes' death as neglect. He argued that Hughes' Mormon constituents and guards allowed and even promoted his demise and eventual death. While his kidneys were damaged, his other internal organs were deemed perfectly healthy.

Depends on whether you believe the official story of his death, or the speculations about his 'real death'. There have been many American Urban Myths about celebrities who staged their deaths, in the case of Mr Hughes it is difficult to dismiss some of the speculations. The man who died in 1976 was claimed to have been a vagrant who had been used as a stand in for Mr Hughes. The stand in was living a Hobos dream life; glamorous Hotel Rooms, all the Booze and Hookers he could ever want. The real Howard Hughes was living a secret life who knows where in the U.S. It is unlikely Mr Hughes 'staged' his death, more likely his stand in simply died and Mr Hughes just adopted another life style.

Remember many of the stories about Mr Hughes are proven, he was a cutting edge test pilot. By the late 1960s he could have flown a test jet from California to England in 6 hours after breakfast, spent the afternoon in England and flown back to California to sleep in his own bed after supper.
