well, i have tried for a week now, and i know it's not nearly enough time, but i really want to LD (mainly because i get disturbing dreams a lot). i have almost succeeded in doing this, when doing a technique (i forget which one, they all end in an ILD, lol). the technique was of staying mentally awake while your body falls asleep, and i almost did it when i saw a blinding light and a huge pain fell over me. it felt a bit like when your foot or a part of your body 'goes to sleep', and it feels like millions of tiny knives are stabbing you. then i woke up.
was that the beginning of a lucid dream? and if so, how could i perfect it?

thanks in advance!

The sensation you described is not a lucid dream. A lucid dream is not a physical sensation. Instead, it is a real dream in which you are consciously aware of the fact that you are dreaming.

I have experienced this a few times, and this is what it feels like:

I feel paralyzed, trapped in my own body. If I try to wake up, I end up lying motionless and unable to move. It is a very unpleasant feeling.

I am able to control my dream and do things I could not do in the real world. This is the best part of lucid dreaming. However, this control is not perfect. For example, if I have have a fear of something bad happening in the dream, it generally will. To make the dream pleasant, I have to clear my mind of any bad thoughts.

The link below is to a Wikipedia article that covers lucid dreaming techniques. In my personal experience, I have found that the best technique is to wake up in the middle of the night, after 4-5 hours of sleep, stay awake for at least 15 minutes and then day dream about something while going back to sleep. The day dream can become a lucid dream.

The second best time to enter a lucid dream is by concentrating on a dream while awake and then maintaining your awareness as you fall asleep. As with the last technique, your day dream or meditation may turn into a lucid dream.

To prepare your body for lucid dreams, you should first have a few nights of dreamless sleep. You can achieve this by having short naps instead of a solid 8-hour period of sleep. If you are dream-deprived, you will be more likely to lucid dream.

You aren't supposed to eat meat or heavy meals before doing this. I found some astral projection sites on Yahoo, maybe they have a lucid dream site as well.
