I come from a chauvinistic family where males are more valued than females. It has been tolerable to a point, but as I grow older, it is sickening to see the ignorant, selfish values of my father manifesting themselves in my older brother. My efforts and the results have been frustrating and fatiguing. Any suggestions?

I believe this is a sincere question, so here's my opinion NOT the answer. Some people one can never change. Since you are different, Alienate yourself from the things you don't like and set up YOU OWN family. The price one has to pay is emotional pain because of the separation from ones you love (whatever they are). Your firm stand and persistence might steer somebody to start reevaluating one's believes. If not, life goes on...

Don't change them. Instead, go out there and do your best at all the things in this world that you'd like to do. I assume you live in America, which is a country where a woman can become anything she wants to be. We're talking about a possible woman president in two years! I was in a similar situation 10 years ago, and it's amazing the respect and dignity I get from my family now that I'm successful in a life I love.
Also, it's okay for your father and brother to have their own opinions, as long as you understand that it's okay for you to disagree with them. You don't have to follow their advice or example in this situation.

I come from the same type of family the best thing to do is to get as good grades as possible, go away to college and get as far away from your family as possible. I know that seems harsh or even hard to do but if you can establish any kind of independece that is great. I don't know how old you are but if you are over 18 try to get an apt. away from your fam or if you are still in high school or younger just bide your time until you can get away from them.

I know this may sound pretty extreme but if theres no way of changing their attittudes then you could try distancing yourself from them and see if that helps. If they think that men are better than woman and not equal then it seems that they dont deserve to be related to you.

Just ignore him. Do the best you can, and when you do better than them, you can show that women are not any lower than men.
