why is this happening

It could be that he has someone else already, or that he only wants to be with you for physical gain (sex), and nothing more. Don't allow yourself to be with someone who doesn't respect you enough to make your relationship public. This could be a warning sign.

Many reasons - he could be in another relationship and you are his "girl on the side." Or, he enjoys your company so much he doesn't want to share a second with anyone. He has been publicly humiliated by a former girlfriend that everyone had met and he wants to "wait and see" with you so he won't have to answer those "how's so-n-so these days and where is she?" questions. Why not ask him this question?

As per my knowledge and experience, there are some possible reasons:
1. He is not ready to tell others.
2. He is waiting for the right time and will give you surprise.
3. He has someone else
4. Some secrets in his mind
Take time and be patient to find out the answer.

Could be that he's married (how old are you two, anyhow?) or has another girlfriend. Is he worried what people will think: his friends or family or co-workers? Could be any of those reasons or others. Talk to him. Tell him it bothers you and you want an honest answer. If he hems and haws and you don't believe him, then is he really for you???
