In part, the war was a legacy of France's colonial rule, which ended in 1954 with the French army's catastrophic defeat at Dienbienphu and the acceptance of the Geneva Conference agreements (see Vietnam). Elections scheduled for 1956 in South Vietnam for the reunification of Vietnam were canceled by President Ngo Dinh Diem. His action was denounced by Ho Chi Minh, since the Communists had expected to benefit from them. After 1956, Diem's government faced increasingly serious opposition from the Viet Cong, insurgents aided by North Vietnam. The Viet Cong became masters of the guerrilla tactics of North Vietnam's Vo Nguyen Giap. Diem's army received U.S. advice and aid, but was unable to suppress the guerrillas, who established a political organization, the National Liberation Front (NLF) in 1960.

Mainly to defeat the spread of communism. Well, the unrest came because many people figured it was none of our business. Then came the flower children of the 60's who wanted to promote love and peace (instead of war). Problem was, they promoted lots of sex, veneral disease, children with only one parent, pot heads, LSD and other mind altering drugs, suicide and a host of other problems. All of this was a far cry from freedom. It started a whole series of new social problems that we're still feeling today.

I find it hard to believe that so many people are so mis-informed with the exception of the one that explains the French involvement. It was not as brief an answer as communism, nor is the answer for the Bay of Pigs just about the communist. It was that we in North America under attack from afar as well. Russia came at us through Cuba, and the Red Chinese came at us through Viet Nam and Korea was still under fire as well. After WWII the wall was built for seclusion of the great continuation of a plan to take over the world. China was not going to be left out of this one and Mao Tse Tung was certainly a force to reckon with, since he kicked our butts. No one else helped us. The French made an abortion out of policy over there the same way they did in Lebanon in Beruit. www.history.com. We bailed them out so many times. That policy that President JFK introduced was a wise one by sending in training troops to help the Vietnamese to defend themselves from the Reds, that were slaughtering them, and torturing them as well. Remember the Chinese considered the Vietnamese people to be like ugly unwanted step-children they were not Pure Chinese? But in the interim many people were using them as prostitutes in many ways. And the influence of the French and their foreign legions full of criminals did not make things better, and that is the truth. Those people were just as mistreated as the Iraqis by Sadaam Hussein. Korea was treated that way as well. Especially by the Japanese in WWII and then China got its strength and took advantage of them right after. That is why Hong Kong was created for all the Chinese people who did not want to be a part of that cruel dictatorship of the Red Chinese. And many good Chinese died creating that place as well. China was so mistreated during WWII and we tried to help them against the Japanese, but like WWI Germany was left starving so was China and that is why the tyranny started, and the ways of Mao Tse Tung, it was a way out for those starving people. That is what happens everytime. So in Viet Nam the same thing so Big Brother goes in to give a helping hand and Kennedy gets shot and then Johnson got bombarded with a real crisis, America was in trouble because they were not going to stop there so we really needed to escalate our troops unfortunately we lost a lot of loved ones and it was poor stadegy and I blame the pentagon for that with all those lousy political people getting rich. We could have done better and that is for sure. But how do we always let things get out of hand? So our peaceful protesters and the world opinion stopped that war in one way . But the real deal was the Saudi's and the Kuwait's American investors, Shell Oil, Sinclair, Marathon, Gulf and Western etc., finished those oil fields for drilling in those places and we made a deal. Capitalism solved that problem then, plus the space race against Russia saved us too. The first man on the moon was the big thing that China and Russia were afraid of that if we could go to the moon we could do a lot more damage then they could on land. So the focus then went to building more technological equipment for war like nuclear weaponry. So the real reason the war stopped is because of economy. And we lost too many men was secondary to the government.
