the screen "shivers" if you will... and when it comes on, it makes a weird noise until the screen is completely lightened. when i turn it off, i see diagonal lines coming towards the center for a brief moment.

Sounds like the monitor, but before you invest in the latest thing, borrow a friend's monitor and plug it in, in place of yours, and make sure it isn't something else. Might save you some hard-earned moola.

The last CRT that went out started ticking, like, at random times. It also made a loud, buzzing noise pressing the power button.
Any trouble with monitors is a sign of emminent death.

if ur monitor is going firstly it will loose its colors and then will show u weird images with weird contrast or brightness, also u can hear ratling sound from ur screen and it wud heat up too.

could be the video card...try plugging in another monitor from a friend and see if the problem persists, if so, then it's the video card.

It's going exact same thing happened to mine and then one day it would not turn on at all.
