...better than in the past. Do you think, even though the world is not perfect, and sad events plague us at the moment, the world is constantly, if very slowly, moving in the right direction and our ancestors will be better off then we are today, and there ancestors will be even better, etc.? I think that humanity does make progress and for every step back we eventually take two forward! What do you think?

There are as many people that believe the world is a better place as there are that think that it is a worse place.Take your own town for an example; If you were to ask ....say 20 people, 10 who were new and 10 who had lived there for a long time to describe to them the place where they lived I am sure that 5 of each group on an average would say positive things and the other 5 would say negative things. One person may say that they love the parks and the neighbour hoods, whilethe others say that there is to much violence on the street and there are not enough parks to enjoy themselves. The rule of opposites apply here as some think its hot and others think its cold. Some hate snow and some hate rain while others love both. It is entirely up to each one of us to as an individual to like it or lump it. It has allways been this way since the begging, and it will be like this for ever. IT IS A GREAT PLACE!!!

OMG
the word you are looking for is decedents not ancestors! lol
lmfao
did no one else catch this?
To answer your question, in many respects, no.
I think my ancestors enjoyed a world with far more promise than the one I was left and the current ruling generation isn't doing any better. In fact they're doing worse.
More damage has been done in the last 6 years, and brought about by a small group of people, than had been done the 25 preceding it put together.
Do I still have hope?
Yes, I am forever an optimist.
I will believe we can make it better if we only try up until the last second I exist.

Since a "better place" is relative you must define better what you mean by a "better place" If you mean the materialistic society we live in today I would have to refer you to the mental health category of yahoo answers where depression is the most prevalent disease. Depression is pandemic in the USA and much of the west. So you then define better as a happier place then we would really have a can of worms because happiness means different things to different people.
A recent survey I heard about (but it can be found on the Internet) was a poll conducted by a firm in member nations of the UN asking, which country respondents would rather be a citizen of and the USA was way down the list. Norway was first choice as I recall (probably because they had recently discovered oil off their coast, HA!)
I do think relative health has bettered and that relative happiness would be the logical criterion of most peoples assessment of a better place but measuring it would be problematic.

It all depends on your own personal view of the past and future. If you call technology that can be used for good as well as bad good, advanced medical care that keep people alive with animal organs, advancement in the manner we now fight wars and the weapons we use that leave the soldiers so sick they are fathering children with body parts never seen before, the new diseases that kill so quickly you do not get a go at the advance medical care, the genetically changed food that no one knows what effect it has on the human body. One could keep going but who knows it all depends how you view it.

I for one am quite glad I live in the present day. I wouldn't want to go back. The middle ages were so turbulent, disease was so prevalent, and worst of all, there was no toilet paper. We are definitely better off.
I'm not sure how much better the future can get. I think we're pretty much at optimum here. We're about as good as human nature will let us get.

The right direction? If not anything else, neuclear warfare is an assured way of human extinction. The whole world is sitting on bombs, and one misunderstandinng can cause a chain of neuclear warheads to go off everywhere. It just needs one bad mistake by a big power.

Its hard to say if we are better or worst. I think in some ways we are better but in other ways we are not. I just wish us lots of luck and hope and pray that things fix themselves.
