Chinese version called "Hong Lou Meng", written in the 18th century by Cao Xueqin, and is considered one of the Four Great Classical Chinese Novels. Amazon.com has about a million different translated versions, many of them come in multiple volumes. I would like the whole story in one complete volume, if possible. I'm also looking for accuracy, with nothing of the original narrative ommited. Has anyone read this book who can recommend a really good translation? Thanks!

I'm reading to compare these two translated versions: the first published by Foreign Language Press, Beijing, China in a four-volume box set by Yang Xianyi and Gldys Yang, the second published by Penguin Classics in five separate paperbacks (Vol. 1-3 by Prof. David Hawkes and Vol. 4-5 by Prof. John Minford). The second ones are more readable while the first ones are, it is said, the outcome of exact translation from Chinese so sometime they're too strict for original meaning. As for other versions I've not read them so I have no comment right now, moreover, it may be difficult to find one complete volume since it's a lengthy epic with 120 chapters.

I did love this poem, but being the nit-picky person I am I am wondering what - their on the ground means - do you mean There on the ground, or they're on the ground - it can't really be 'their'. (I am I am - looks really funny) also and Their I found (must be 'there') I have now been forced to resurrect a children's poem I once wrote about 'socks' - look out for it under 'Socks' Where do they go? More like this please
