They're the same usually, with the following exception. Sometimes all-wheel drive means the vehicle is in 4-wheel drive all the time. 4-wheel drive means that you can put the vehicle into 4-wheel drive manually.

Four Wheel Drive was once a registered trademark of the FWD Corporation, so you can't say your vehicle is a four wheel drive with out infringing on their copyright. You must say it is all wheel drive, or 4x4. Lots of trucks are all wheel drive and have up to 10 wheels.

Four wheel drive is generally part time, you can put it in/out.
The transfer case has a gear or chain drive (mechanical connection) thus always a 50/50 power split.
All wheel drive has several variants, but generally has a fluid drive transfer case. It works all the time, there is no on/off switch.
Because it is fluid drive, the power can be sent front/rear in whatever amount needed.

not sure will google http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/difference_4WD_awd.html All wheel drive (AWD) is a system that powers all four wheels of a vehicle at all times as well. Full time symmetric AWD would be the best term to be used. Difference to full time 4WD is that a "4-low" setting is not available in AWD cars. Due to the lack of "low range" AWD vehicles are much less capable in off-road settings than full time 4WD vehicles, but work perfectly well on-road.
