Perception of one self is a measure of ones intelligence. The educational measurement of anybody's ability goes through four stages of development.

First you are unconsciously unaware. You do not know about something, and you do not know that that something exists.

Then you move to consciously unaware, you realise that you know nothing about something.

Then you slip into a state of being unconsciously aware, in that you gain knowledge of the thing you thought you did not know, but not enough to realise it.

Finally you become consciously aware, in that you know some thing, and you are aware of the fact.

So I would say that stupid folks are somewhat aware of their own limitations, but because they are out of their own depth, unaware of the boundaries of that knowledge gap, so trip up quite a bit. Where as most folks can see a question or result coming, because we have been there before, or we have enough knowledge to see that we are heading out of our own area of comfort.

As to where we draw the line, try the sandpit, it where we start to build up our brain organisational skills. I find most people - as individuals - are far from stupid however; it is only when we get into groups that all logic and common sense goes out of the window.

I also notice that most folks judge a book on its covers, and the worst kind of folls will concentrate on grammatical content of a question when they don't understand that question. I do not know of one single test to 'pidgeon hole' folks. MENSA tests do not measure IQ, but only your ability to undertake IQ tests.

There are tests for language skills, memory and physical co-ordination, and I suppose you would have to take a mean of all these tests - to find a level which if below would be the threshold of 'stupidity'. But since it is so easy to spot, I guess that nobody has bothered to undertake such research - why would they, they are interested in the other end of the spectrum.

I agree with some of the other answers here. The knowledge of basic grammar should be where the line is drawn.

It would depend on how high functioning the person is. Someone who is fairly high functioning might know that he or she is different(like Forrest Gump). But someone who is very low functioning would not be capable of knowing any different.
