What so ever I have heard that in the United States that it is illegal and if you do get caught then they MAY fine you if THEY feel like it. Thanks for your answers! Best answer gets 10 points..

Unless you are attaining the downloads from a legitimate source like napster you are stealing intellectual property. I don't know if Canada is enforcing the copyright laws involved but it is still illegal

It is illegal in Canada as it is in the rest of the world with the exception of Afghanistan and Iraq which do not have copyright laws. From memory Canada has a 'life plus 70' copyright law meaning that all music is protected by law for the life of the copyright holder and for 70 years after their death. Copyright laws are applied in respect of the country you are in so whilst it may be legal to download in one country (shorter copyright periods for example) it may still be illegal in Canada.

Unless something is claerly marked as being in the public domain (free of copyright) or there is a licence or other agreement allowing you to download then it's safe to say that it's illegal to download.

Just think that you have painted a piece of art which took 1 month. When you tried to sell it, you find that somebody else made copy of it and distributing it for free... What would you do? And how would you feel about it?
