Are there any good sites where i can go to find explanations of Tartuffe scene by scene or act by act? I checked Sparknotes and they dont have.

In Act 2 what is the misunderstanding between Mariane and Valere?

Mariane and Valere have an argument b/c she was engaged to him, but her father suddenly insists she marry Tartuffe instead. Valere thinks she no longer loves him and tells her to marry the man and see if he cares. She then thinks he no longer loves her and says she will. The maid, Dorine, has to talk them out of their foolishness.

Okay, in the first place, there are a number of excellent English language translations of this play available. It's a good play, and it's not hard to read. You should try to do this for yourself.

As for Marianne and Valere...Tartuffe is plotting to marry Marianne. Tartuffe would really rather seduce Orgon's wife, Elmire, but marrying Marianne would enable him to access Orgon's wealth more easily. Marianne tells Valere about Orgon's plan to have Tartuffe marry her, hoping that Valere will object to the plan, and act to prevent it. Instead, they both start acting like 3-year-olds, "testing" the depth of each other's love and commitment to the relationship.

WHEN you read the scene, you'll see what I mean.

you can look it up on project gutenberg (whole text, for free). IIRC, Mariane (under advice from her maid) was pretending that she loved Tartuffe so that Valere would stand up for her?

It's been awhile since I read the play, so you should double-check.
