a dummy is what you americans call a pacifier or soother.

he is waking for the dummy to be replaced, as that is how he falls asleep. i do like him having it, he settles straight away. but i am waking up to replace it alot at night.

It's recommended now to let them sleep with the pacifier/dummy until they are a year old, because it has been proven to reduce the risks of SIDS. But if he can't sleep without it, and wakes every time it falls out of his mouth, that's not good.

By about six to seven months, he should be able to replace it for himself, but it's different for each child. The baby I took care of (as a nanny) was able to replace her pacifier by five months.

When he cries, go to him, and adjust him if he's in an uncomfortable position, put on his mobile if he has one, or put on some soothing music, or even just sing to him. I've found that children are soothed just by the -presence- of another person, even when they cannot see them. But don't go to him every time he starts whimpering. Only when he actually crys out loudly.

He's very young, too young to know any better. Let him keep it. Mothers always have to get up in the middle of the night for a five month old, don't you have to do feedings? Perhaps you should care for him instead of just replacing the dummy. The latest a child should have a dummy is 2 years, at that time it causes problems with teeth alignment.

Ahh...what is a dummy? Im assuming you are talking about a pacifier? If you are, I would still let the baby use it. If he/she is waking up at night, they should be able to comfort themselves back to sleep without it!

I have a child that was attached to his as I called it "Binky" for a long time. The doctors told me it was fine for him to have it till he was a year old. Then by that time I should let it fade away. I didnt listen, this was my baby... well he had his till he was 2 years 3 months and picky about the kind he had (which they stop making) so when he broke it... he was out of luck, and I was happy. But it took a while for him to live without it. So, just remember the advice my doctors gave me... before the age of 1, its fine.. so relax, in time hun! Take care & good luck. ~Baddest

im guessing the dummy is the paci? i dont know. but sounds like youre working on i although its very difficult esp when the bbay is fussy and a "dumy" would make him content. i tried not to start with one from birth, but gave in about 2 days in cause he would go to sleep almost immediantly..esp if i ws exhausted. try weaning him when he is a little older. it may be easier. he may give it up on his ow, maybe next month, maybe a year from now

let him keep it. also go to your local gnc store ( general nutrition store ) buy some melatonion, all it does is help you have a restful night's sleep. but first make sure it is ok to give it to your child. ask the child's doctor. my son is the same way and he is 4 yrs. old and wakes up every couple of hours until i started giving him the melatonion and now he sleeps all night with the exception of maybe one night a week and mostly sleeps all night. but make sure you ask the doctor first......

He is only 5 months old. I say let him keep it for a while. He is still a baby and most babies need to suck in order to soothe themselves.

Dont get rid of it!!! If he likes it and it soothes him then just leave him be. It could be worse and he could be sucking his thumb and ruining his teeth.

let him keep it until he gets tired of it. It will happen eventually.
