Recently my computer has been running extremely slow. My virus and spyware scans (avast, adaware, zonealarm spyware scan, counterspy, microsoft malicious software removal toool) turned up about eight or so problems. My computer is running slightly faster now, but it is still a lot slower than it was a few days ago. I have heard some people say that system restore is a good idea, but others have said its not. What do you all recommend?

Do this first: Update your anti-virus program with the latest virus definitions. Then reboot into Safe Mode and run your anti-virus program for a complete check. Based on what you said, you probably will find a problem(s) which you can then take care of. BUT, assuming that some virus or trojan is found, chances are that it has also infected your system restore points. So, you really need to go to the system restore window and check the box that says "Turn Off System Restore On All Drives". What that does is delete all the previous restore points, all of which are probably infected anyway. Then run your antivirus in Safe Mode again, and when all is clear, reboot and then go back to System Restore and uncheck that box. Hope this helps.

Well, you don't need to do a system restore, you need to get rid of a few redundant things. You don't need ZoneAlarm and counterspy and microsoft malicious software removal tool. You do need Ad-Aware. Uninstall everything else. ZoneAlarm is particularly bad about resource hogging and slowing down your computer. You might need a good firewall, and I recommend Comodo. However, if you have Windows XP, Windows' firewall isn't too bad.

When was the last time you defragged your hard disk and performed a disk cleanup? or Cleaned the registry?
All these things will help the computer run faster and smoother because it doesn't have to work so hard to find things. Do the disk cleanup before or after the registry scan, but before defragging: Click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and Disk Cleanup. Remove everything it finds.
Safe Registry Cleanup: Microsoft's Live OneCare Cleanup Scan:

Disk Defrag: Auslogics Disk Defrag, much better and faster than Windows: http://www.auslogics.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Go to http://www.ca.com and click on home & office then anti-virus (Ca Anti-Virus)
This is a site for everything
http://www.filehippo.com
Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and delete any programs that you are not needing.
Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Defragment (Defrag Your Pc)>Then run the Disc Clean Up.
Go to the top of this screen and click on Tools Then on Internet Options and delete cookies, files & history
I would not do a system restore until i done all of this and if it does not help them perform it.
