yes, it is a dyi. Pull the dryer out and disconnect the exhaust hose. See if it is blocked, if not, turn on the dryer, let it run for a minuet, and feel the air coming out of the exhaust. If it is hot, then check the exhaust hose again for blockage. If the air isn't hot you might have a bad heater coil. Take the back off the dryer and you will be able to see if one is burnt into.

check vent lines and see if they are plugged with lint. this will cause the dryer not to heat correctly and possible fire hazard can result.
clean all areas free of dirt and lint, making sure you disconnect the dryer first.
remove back and vacuum good. also clean well the lint trap. put back together, and try again without clothes. will heat in short time if this was the problem.
if this doesn't correct it, might have overheated and need a bit of shop maintenance.

Make sure your vent pipe isn't clogged. If the vent is clogged the dryer will start to heat, then a safety switch will electrically disconnect the heating elements so when you check it seems cold. Actually the elements could have overheated due to lack of air flow from a clogged vent or lint screen.

Have you tried cleaning your lint filter? Lint can also get down in the cracks where the filter goes, just try to get it all out. My dryer started doing that too and its because the filter didn't catch all of the lint. If that doesn't work then you probably need a new dryer because it is a much bigger problem!

Could be a lint build up which is a fire hazard. Besides cleaning lint trap disconnect vent hose that leads from dryer to outside and make sure it's clear. Vacuum any accessible areas. Cheapest way to start.

It could be the thermostat, could be in the timer, could be in the heat control, could be a bad heating element.
Unless you know how to test these things, it's not a DIY project.

I rebuilt my dryer, so my idea of "DIY" is different.

It does sound like the thermostat, or heating element.

Through the years, I have often had just the knobs that don't work....last time I just went to a Maytag dealer and ask for a new temperature knob. That was all that it was.....
