I wouldn't say they are ignorant and selfish. They are just going through the appropriate developmental stages, defining who they are as individuals. We were all there once, and even though teenage behaviors may confuse others, elders should not be so quick to insult teens. There may be some teens who are ignorant and selfish, but there are plenty of children and adults who are as well!

Ignorant? Well, if you mean absent of critical knowledge necessary for making adult decisions...then yes.

Selfish? Absolutely! If they were not focused on themselves during these important years, they would never learn any social skills to function in the adult world. Teen years are for intense focus on how the world feels to you and if your attention were on everyone else, you would never learn what was going on inside yourself and you would be socially retarded.

The trick here is to GROW OUT OF the "selfish stage" and begin to be aware of everyone else on the planet and where your place is amongst us. While you were mesmerized by your own three facial hairs, the remaining 6 billion of us have been collectively waiting for you to step up and cure cancer... How's that going by the way?

Quite the contrary. I'm 22 and I think "kids" are getting better and better. Studies show that youth volunteer more, are more communally active, involve themselves in religious faith more, and have more soundly traditional values than past generations.

Here's an article I found particularly comforting...

Teens will be teens--naturally a bit more self-absorbed and flakey than some would like. But as the article says..."The kids are alright!"

Ignorant in the sense that they still have a lot of life to live and haven't experienced a lot of things that they naturally will in the course of their lives. Selfish, no.

Some are, but not all. I'm guessing that if you're asking this question, you're probably not too selfish.

I'm not a teenager, but I'm not too old to remember how often people treated me like I didn't know what I was talking about. I don't like that!

Yes, but relax because it is OK. You are going through a perfectly normal natural phase of human maturation. Enjoy it while you can.
